Last weekend, 3 weeks after Toby started out on this nasty nasty cold, we brought him to urgent care. His cough just wasn't getting any better, and in fact, was getting worse. It was violent. His lips would turn blue. It was terrbile.
The urgent care doctor said pneumonia and sent us to the hospital where we were told it was actually whooping cough and that it would last for another 2 months (at least). Fter a night at the hospital and a few more trips to urgent care, we are starting to feel more comfortable with Toby's new, though temporary, condition.
We have also gotten many chastisements from nurses because we didn't have Toby vaccinated right away which may be why he got it in the first place.
I like vaccines. I think we should have them. I know some people don't, and I understand why. But for my kids, we want them vaccinated. I just wish there was a medical professional around here who could give me the straight poop on vaccines.
In the hospital, the doctor on call, who practices in Minneapolis, could tell me off the top of her head that there is a new DTaP vaccine on the market now. First I kissed her, the I asked her if she would open a clinic in Marshall, to which she kindly declined.
Nuts.
Why, oh why, can't any doctors around here help me with this?
And then on top of it all, my fully vaccinated Ana got it too.
Sigh and double sigh.
Here's some pics and a recipe to cheer me up!
Ooo! Lookit this one! That's our table at the farmer's market. We're gearing up for another morning at the market as I type.
And here's a cute one of Toby and Daddy.
And of course, our green gold. That is, green salsa. I never knew this stuff was so darn tasty! And bonus, you can dip your chips in it OR you can pour it over your chicken enchiladas.
Recipe:
1 pound of tomatillos dehusked
2 cloves of minced garlic
1 small chopped onion
1 t. cumin
1/2 t. salt (or to taste)
juice from 1 lime
Roast your tomatillos in the oven under the broiler for a few minutes, or until the skin starts to blacken. Put all your ingredients into the blender. Puree and ENJOY!

Ana has whooping cough too??? Oh man!! Is it possible that I can avoid it when I get back, and still hang out with the kids?
On another note, I LOVE green salsa. Better than the red stuff.
btw, can you put some maple syrup in 3 oz. bottles so i can bring some back on the plane? i hate this no liquids rule!
Ana got whooping cough after being vaccinated for it???? How effective are these shots??? On the plus side...their natural immunity against whooping cough will be GREAT once their over this stint with it!!!!!
Char, the shots are 90 - 80% effective. That said, I can't wait to tell the nurses at the doctor's office that Ana got it too (so much for your all powerful vaccines Miss nursey-pants). Yes, very very very awesome immunity!
Mary, they aren't contagious anymore. and we'll try to track down some 3 oz bottles for you : )
I am glad I am not the only parent that would like a straight answer about vaccines from doctors! Our prayers are with you guys!
