Sorry for all the quiet! It's been an unexpectedly eventful weekend. I won't go into details because there are other things more important going on.

When Dan and Ana and I turned off 19 to journey the last few miles home to the farm last night we glanced around. The flashing lights of the highway patrol a few miles north towards Cottonwood gave the heartwrenching confirmation of what had been on the news. I am writing, of course, about the awful school bus accident. I am still very much a newcomer round these parts, but judging from Dan's demeanor last night, I can only imagine how the community here is feeling.

We still don't know the names of the children, but it's awfully certain that at least one was a St. Clotilde's child. Nothing I can write would convey the sorrow and tragedy that is happening here, so I will simply ask for your prayers for the families of these little ones.

Nothing is official yet, but the word from the grapevine is that none of the dead were from St. Clotilde (Green Valley) or St. Mary's (Cottonwood). Some of the injured were, however. And the bus driver, who is being hailed as a hero for his tireless effort to get all the kids out of the bus, is a St. Clotilde parishoner.

As for the four dead, 2 of them were from the same family, and another child was a girl who had been adopted from China.

Here's the latest "official" update.

At times like this, it is difficult to see how God, in His permissive will, can allow evil like this to occur. But, as the Catechism says, "Faith in God the Father Almighty can be put to the test by the experience of evil and suffering. God can sometimes seem to be absent and incapable of stopping evil. But in the most mysterious way God the Father has revealed his almighty power in the voluntary humiliation and Resurrection of his Son, by which he conquered evil." Our faith gives us confidence that, in the universal scheme of things, this tragedy is not the final word.
