I hope I'm not jinxing this by writing it.
BUT.
The past two nights, something new has been happening. I nurse Toby to sleep and then slip away. Typically, I race about the house, spending the next twenty minutes getting ready for bed and trying to fit in a few household chores before Toby stirs and realizes I'm not there, thus breaking into a tearful state of awake. Except yesterday, and today, I nursed him, slipped away, and then went on to enjoy two hours of uninterrupted bliss until I go to bed and cuddle up next to him again.
It's like I can have a hobby again.
Anyhow, more about bedtime. Tonight, I nursed Toby to sleep, slipped away, and got Ana ready for bed. I explained to her that she has to be REALLY quiet and let Toby sleep when she gets into bed. In preparation for Ana's presence in our bed, I put the still slumbering Toby into the bassinette which is right next to my side of the bed.
Of course, Ana was really excited to be allowed to be so close to Toby while he was sleeping (normally I'm like a momma bear when it comes to letting Ana get anywhere near Toby when we're in bed). But she did very good in not making a sound while she was waiting to fall asleep. I know this because I had the baby monitor on to make sure nothing would go fowl in our little family experiment.
Except for one incident.
Well, incident is the wrong word. Incident would refer to Ana's discovery of a new button of mommy's she can push. Or something naughty and premeditated that Ana decided would be act de rigeur for the afternoon. Rather, I would say it was the witness of one of the more tender parts of Ana's two year old heart.
Over the baby monitor, I heard Ana whisper very softly, "Hi Tobs."

That is the sweetest thing! Ana is turning out to be quite a great big sister!
It's those moments we need to try remember when they are in the midst of their not-so-sweet moments.
What a gift siblings have in having eachother.
